LESLIE D. FARRELL is an Emmy and Peabody-award-winning writer/producer/director of documentary, unscripted, and scripted television.

As documentary writer, producer, and director she has received an Emmy Award for Sports on the Silver Screen and a Peabody Award for Journey of the African American Athlete both for HBO. She is also known for the multi-award-winning independent historical-comedy documentary Electoral Dysfunction starring Mo Rocca.

She has served as Series writer, producer, and director of numerous high-profile PBS series including season one of African American Lives (currently titled Finding Your Roots), which she developed for host Henry Louis Gates Jr. The series was hailed by The New York Times as “the most exciting and stirring documentary on any subject to appear on television in a long time … exquisitely produced and brilliantly conceived.”

Farrell began her career at Blackside, Inc. in Boston, where she directed, wrote, and produced episodes for their acclaimed national PBS series Slavery and the Making of America, America’s War on Poverty, This Far by Faith, Hopes on the Horizon, Words that Wound, and other films.

Additionally, her documentaries have been awarded two Cable Aces, three Cine Golden Eagles, two DuPont-Columbia Awards, the Christopher Award, the Silver Angel Award, and many others.

In dramatic television, she produced Miracle’s Boys for Spike Lee and Nickelodeon. The series received a WGA Award for Best Children’s Script –Episodic & Specials.

She is a former network executive for Bravo, NBCUniversal where she wrote and produced the specials Race in America: A Movement not a Moment and Race in America: Our Vote Counts. Also, while at Bravo she oversaw such hits as The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Southern Charm, Millionaire Matchmaker, Extreme Guide to Parenting, and many more. Farrell’s work has also been seen on MTV, BET, E!, CNBC, NBC, The History Channel, and other national outlets and film festivals.

Leslie grew up in Berkley California and received a Bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Nevada, Reno. She continued on to get her Masters from San Francisco State in Radio & Television.
